The Atlantic Action Committee for Children and Youth was created in August of 1999 by representatives from all four Atlantic provinces. Participants that included professionals, parents, youth and interested citizens from all walks of life identified the need to create in Atlantic Canada a forum in which a strong supportive voice for children and youth could emerge. This voice would be one dedicated to fostering best practice approaches in services for children and youth and to encouraging our communities to be more child and youth inclusive. The first membership of the Action Committee also sought to promote greater collaboration within government departments, as well as between public and private agencies. One of the means it chose to achieve this objective was to host an annual meeting that provided an opportunity for networking and the sharing of ideas. In order to be an effective voice for children and youth in Atlantic Canada, the Action Committee has been careful to preserve its independence from governmental bodies and from larger institutions. It is strongly felt that only by being completely independent can the Action Committee claim to have as its sole objective the betterment of the lives of children and youth.
