A. L. Pray & Son Potato Company Limited is a well established family-owned company with a history of satisfying customers for more than thirty years. Anton Pray founded the company with his only son Stephen in the early 1970’s. After Anton’s passing in September 2006, Stephen assumed the responsibilities for all aspects of the company. A. L. Pray & Son Potato Company Limited markets the production of the family farm operation, Pray Farms Limited and also buys potatoes from other growers according to the market’s demand. These markets include Canada as well as the United States and offshore to Cuba. Seed potatoes are the main focus of the company but they operate a fresh packing facility as well which sizes and washes fresh table potatoes in various types of packages. The potato growing operation is a vital part of the family’s business enterprises. Pray Farms Limited is situated in a small Danish community located in Northwestern New Brunswick close to the United States border. Its higher altitude and fertile soils make it an excellent location to grow quality seed potatoes and great tasting table potatoes. The farming operation is managed by Stephen’s son Chris who has three young sons. Potatoes are grown in rotation with oats and barley along with some cover crops including rye grass, red clover and alfalfa. Approximately 400 acres of potatoes are grown along with a similar acreage of cereals annually. The potatoes are stored in state-of-the art warehouses with computer controlled ventilation and humidification. In 1992, a new packing shed was constructed to meet the increased demand for seed potatoes. New European sizing equipment was added in 1996 along with an expansion of the existing packing facility. This was necessary to facilitate strict sizing requirements for various markets. Seed potatoes are packed in various container sizes ranging from 50 pound paper bags to 2500 pound jumbo bags and are also shipped bulk on-the-floor of transport trailers. Potato production practices have changed drastically in the last thirty years and will continue to do so in the future. Pray Farms Limited and A. L.
