Who s the Director of your company? What s his background? Ray Chesin is the originator and Director of Aria Nuova. Ray has considerable production experience, both on the professional opera stage and in the design of educational media materials at the university level. From 1980 to 1985, Ray worked as an Equity stage manager on various mainstage production assignments for professional opera companies in western Canada, among them Edmonton Opera, Manitoba Opera, Pacific Opera Victoria, and Vancouver Opera. Since 1984, Ray has busied himself with translating, producing, and supplying surtitles to opera companies across North America. Ray received his technical theatre training at the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts, graduating with a diploma in Theatre Crafts & Design. Prior to becoming involved in theatre production, Ray taught chemistry at Simon Fraser University, and audio-visual production in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia. He possesses an M.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Manitoba, and an M.Ed. in Communications, Media, & Technology from UBC. Introducing young people to opera and and working with opera students have also played a part in Ray s life. In addition to two seasons as touring stage manager for Edmonton Opera s Opera in the Schools program, Ray was production/stage manager for the Opera Division of the Courtenay Youth Music Centre on Vancouver Island for three summers. As well, he was production/stage manager for Canada Opera Piccola in Victoria for two summers. An avid Bronze Level ballroom dancer, Ray lives in Sidney, on beautiful Vancouver Island, British Columba, with his cat Chutney.
