Susan Watts is the youngest member of a klezmer music dynasty that traces back to 19th century Ukraine and early 20th century Philadelphia. She is the great-granddaughter of legendary klezmer bandleader Joseph Hoffman, and the daughter of beloved Klezmer drummer and NEA National Heritage Fellowship honoree Elaine Hoffman-Watts. Susan has carried on her family tradition with great distinction, having recorded and toured widely with her mother and with such artists as Socalled, Frank London s Klezmer Brass All-Stars, Mikveh, and the Klez Dispensers, to name only a few. She is known for her powerful trumpet, soulful yiddish vocal stylings, and exuberant stage persona. She is an Ashkenaz favourite, having performed at each of our last few festivals. Fanfare Severni is inspired by the "village" big band sounds of Konsonans Retro, Boban Markovic, Fanfare Ciocarlia, and Frank London. Fanfare Severni is Canada s newest "supergroup," featuring members of such celebrated ensembles as Shtreiml, Alerlay, La Tourelle Orkestra, Les Gitans de Sarajevo, The Sergiu Popa Ensemble, and Kaba Horo. Fanfare Severni s repertoire includes high energy versions of traditional melodies from Klezmer, Moldavian, Serbian, Bulgarian and Turkish traditions, as well as unique original compositions.
