John Lazenby is the owner and principal consultant of Practical Safety Solutions. John brings an analytical approach to his Health and Safety consulting practice. He has a background in mechanical engineering design and drafting, including an apprenticeship in UK, which means that he can relate to engineers and maintenance personnel. He has experience in manufacturing, so he understands the demands of a production environment. John s work in health and safety grew from this long term manufacturing background with increasing involvement in environmental and safety related projects. When the WHMIS Regulation was enacted John was asked to introduce the program to four plants of a major Canadian packaging materials company. Since that time he has been committed to assisting clients reduce their costs associated with Occupational Health and Safety. John s track record includes working with Eureka Foundry where he drove a five-year improvement in safety statistics: Incident Rate from 33.2 down to 11.6, Severity Rate from 210 to 94.2 per 100,000 hours. He has also assisted members of the Hamilton-Halton Homebuilders Association, including writing a monthly H&S article for their newsletter. His investigation experience includes a potentially serious chemical incident at a steel fireplace and water heater manufacturer where he developed written recommendations to avoid recurrence, and trained workers. He also led a major waste audit while at Twinpak, which resulted in the avoidance of a sewer discharge penalty of $48,000/year. Other assignments include performing hazardous materials audits, including for LOF Glass, a major automotive glass manufacturer, with detailed written reports, and development of a simple MSDS tracking system; and investigation of areas for future growth and developing recommendations for Wastewise, a community-based non-profit organization in the recycling business. John s experience also includes writing health and safety policies and programs for clients in manufacturing, construction and retail, and performing accident investigations with detailed written reports and recommendations. He has developed training materials and trained workers, supervisors, and managers in all aspects of Health and Safety, including Due Diligence. He has experience in communicating with MOL Inspectors and Hygienists, and WSIB Claims Adjudicators and medical staff, and managing WSIB claims and return to work programs. John served as a Certified Member and Management Co-chair of the Joint Health and Safety Committee, and Chair of Plant Ergonomic Committee, in a unionized (CAW) environment. He was co-chair of the Canadian Foundry Association (CFA) Health and Safety Committee which developed a Health and Safety Guide for the foundry industry. Presently he is the Coordinator of a WSIB Safety Group sponsored by CFA, chairing meetings, assisting members, and representing CFA at WSIB Safety Group Sponsors meetings.
