There are many different types and sizes of tractors, from the household lawn tractor used to mow large swaths of grass to the huge agriculture tractor that requires a ladder to get into and weighs many tons. They are very useful for their different applications, and actually quite fun and pleasant to drive and work in. Not only that, they are the workhorses for the agriculture industry around the world. The workhorses before the widespread use of tractors and traction engines were just that, horses. Just like tractors in the 1850s horses were incredibly expensive and absolutely indispensible. These early farm tractors were ungainly steam driven machines that were prone to breaking down and were very difficult to find tractor parts for repairs. One of the first practical tractors was built by John Froelich in 1892 but it wasn t until 1911 that the design really became successful. Tractors were slow to catch on initially. This was due to their prohibitive cost and difficulty of repair. The technology was so new that there were no mechanics, repair shops or replacement parts. Often things were Jimmy rigged together with available pieces. When Henry Ford began mass producing the affordable and easily repaired Fordson tractor sales skyrocketed and by 1923 were used in 77% of US farms, often still alongside horses. In the 20s there were raging debates on the usefulness of a utility tractor, they were difficult to repair, cold and lifeless, expensive, loud, dangerous and stinky, but over the last 90 years they have completely replaced the horse and are found on literally every single agriculture farm. They are here to stay. The key to finding the right tractor is to know what work will need to be done with it. Residential tractors are great for mowing lawns and hauling small loads, but they can t tow a baler. Horsepower is the first thing that should be considered. There are three types of horsepower that need to be known. The most useful number is called drawbar horsepower which is the actual power transferred to the ground. PTO (power take off) horsepower is a higher number so if often quoted by salesmen, who may also quote the engine horsepower. Engine horsepower is not the same and may be misleading. An efficient tractor can have less horsepower in the engine but more on the ground. The weight of the tractor is important as well, but heavier doesn t necessarily mean better, often it can be quite the opposite although it is often a selling point. Extra weight can always be added when necessary. Size can determine the mobility of the tractor but more often than not, a small but very powerful tractor is the best choice. Lift capacity for front loaders is important for anyone wanting to move a large amount of dirt or supplies, and four wheel drive is indispensible as is a strong transmission. The last thing to consider is the resale value of the tractor. A popular, name brand tractor will always be easier to find a new home for when the robotic tractors take over agriculture as we know it.
