I start with an in-depth discussion with the clients to determine their expectattions and individual taste. This will include talking about things like paths, patios, lawns, pools, flowerbeds and how the garden will be used. At this stage I also discuss with the clients how much they expect to contribute to the upkeep of the garden. This may vary from little or nothing to full responsibility. The second stage is the production of a design. This starts with the layout of the garden, with scale drawings in plans as well as elevation if desired. Once the layout is approved, detailed plans and discussions follow including: Flowerbeds and other planted areas with choice and location of plants Hard landscaping features such as paths, patios and terraces with precise dimensions and locations Details of water features such as ornamental ponds Garden structures such as arbours, gazebos and pergolas, with scale drawings that a carpenter will be able to work from in constructing them Changes in garden level that will improve drainage and are relevant to the placing of any water features as well as improving the overall aesthetics of the garden, such as the construction of raised terraces. The final stage is implementation, undertaken if the client requests it. In this stage I act in the capacity both of doing the work myself (such as the planting) and of supervising those hired to execute the structural and hardscaping aspects.
