The term "software development" is quite vague. What we mean by it is the development of any computer program that automates some task. Software is therefore, in our terms, the glue that holds users and their data together. We write software for stand-alone applications, for multi-use applications and for internet applications. For stand-alone (non-internet) software this means the creation of various software components (files with extensions including .EXE, .DLL, etc) that are installed on client computers and allows them to do whatever they have requested. We use Microsoft s Visual Basic almost exclusively in this role. For multi-user applications, the focus is toward allowing multiple simultaneous use of what is essentially a stand-alone piece of software. Here the database becomes important, for these vary in their abilities to permit such use. Access may be appropriate in relatively small groups of users, but more powerful database like Oracle and SQL Server are required if rigourous controls for use are needed. For internet development work, we use a combination of Visual Basic, Active Server Pages (ASP), Javascipt and VBScript, with some Java. The static portions of the pages are developed using HTML, dynamic HTML, XML, and CSS, all of which are text-based languages for dealing with the content of web pages. Any database requirements are added with much the same regimen as listed above for multi-user applications.
