Dr. Vasta has a BS and MS in nursing and a PhD in clinical psychology. She is licensed both as a registered nurse and as a registered clinical counsellor in British Columbia. She received her training as a psychoanalyst in Los Angeles at the Psychoanalytic Center of California. Dr. Vasta has been a graduate psychoanalyst for more than twenty-five years and is a full member of the International Psychoanalytical Association , the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society and the Canadian Institute of Psychoanalysis. She is also a member of the Western Branch Psychoanalytic Society and is a supervising and training psychoanalyst with the Vancouver Psychoanalytic Institute. Dr. Vasta was in private practice in the Los Angeles area for 19 years and has had a private practice in Victoria for nearly 15 years. Most of Dr. Vasta s patients come to her because they are either depressed or very anxious. Many of them have gone through painful relationships and some are going through a difficult breakup or divorce. Some of the people who see Dr. Vasta have had eating disorders or suffered sexual or physical abuse. She treats individuals that are 16 years of age or older and who want to talk and try to understand the meaning of their problems as they go about making changes in their behaviour. Dr. Vasta uses a psychoanalytic approach in the work she does. People she treats see her from one to four times a week. Dr. Vasta is also available to supervise psychotherapists who are interested in learning about psychoanalytic psychotherapy. What is psychoanalysis? When people ask about psychoanalysis they usually want to know about psychoanalytic treatment. Psychoanalysis is based on the belief that meanings of personal experiences often remain unacknowledged. These unconscious meanings may give form to unhappiness revealed in symptoms, troubling personality traits, recurrent difficulties in work or love relationships, or disturbances in mood and self-esteem. Psychoanalytic treatment helps to bring these unconscious meanings of personal experience to the surface, by linking the person s current relationships and patterns of behaviour to their historical origins. This permits a person to see how they have changed and developed over time, thereby offering the potential to deal more constructively with their current life. Analysis is an intimate partnership. The bonds established in the course of treatment create a safe environment for self-revelation. Exploration of these bonds also reveals important ways in which difficulties can repeat themselves. The experience with the analyst is not simply intellectual, but is emotional and spans the range of human expressivity. Continuity of treatment is essential to developing the closeness required for this form of treatment. The person sets their own pace and their own agenda for the treatment by saying everything that comes to mind to the best of their ability. As the person speaks, hints of the unconscious sources of current difficulties gradually begin to make themselves clear through repetitive patterns of behaviour, in the topics which the person finds to talk about, and in the ways the person relates to the analyst.
