Timeraiser was conceptualized in 2002 in response to a group of friends wondering how it could be easier to find meaningful, relevant volunteer opportunities. Now, 7 years and 10 Timeraisers later, it is amazing that this grass-roots initiative has flourished into a well-known, annual event that operates in 6 cities across Canada. National expansion of the program began in 2006 with the 1st Calgary Timeraiser. A strategy was then developed for further growth with 2 cities added in 2008 - Vancouver and Ottawa - and an additional 2 in 2009 - Hamilton and Edmonton. This expansion was conceptualized with manageable, meaningful growth being a priority "“ how to grow rather than why to grow. The focus remained on nurturing vital local partnerships, engaging enthusiastic and skilled local volunteers while going deeper into existing cities. We have been able to incorporate our experiences from each city to empower local teams of volunteers, building on our collective knowledge and skills. Our experience has been that the Timeraiser s success is directly linked fostering partnerships with local organizations and empowering local volunteers with the tools, information and opportunity to support to the program. We have also played the role of catalyst by bringing the emerging concepts of community development to the audience of volunteers and agencies that participate in Timeraiser. In 2008 we brought together emerging community leaders from across Canada prior to the 5th Toronto Timeraiser. Our goal was to provide a forum to share ideas and learn from a variety of diverse community impact initiatives across the country. We explored what is similar and what is different from city to city and each person returned to their city with new ideas of how to make the Timeraiser as relevant and meaningful to their community. This collaborative approach to hosting Timeraisers is a key factor in our success to date. We can now show that the program is an effective and impactful way to help people get, and stay, involved in the community. By the end of 2009 the Timeraiser will have
