In 1919 my father, Clayton Dotzert, finally came home. At the end of WW I, the RAF fighter pilot came home to Waterloo, Ontario looking for a change, and a new opportunity. It was a difficult time for him and the world at large. Everyone in Europe still reeled from the devastation of the war. Yet there was hope and an optimistic view of the future. After a well-deserved rest, Dad began manufacturing leather workgloves with my uncle Gordon Raymond under the name Quality Glove Company Limited, in Waterloo. The company underwent a variety of changes, and in 1922 the Dotzert Glove Company Limited was born. As with so many companies, the Depression of the 1930s took its toll on Dotzert Glove. Combined with the scarcity of leather during WW II, the company struggled through a period of inactivity. With the close of WW II, I returned home from Navy service in the North Atlantic, eager to revive the name of Dotzert Glove. In 1947, the continuing scarcity of leather forced me to operate Dotzert Glove on a part-time basis from my home. As leather became more readily available business increased, and in 1948 we purchased a building on Bricker Ave. in Waterloo. Over the next several years, we continued to grow, establishing our line of gloves from coast to coast. In 1961, the University of Waterloo entered a phase of expansion and purchased our building on Bricker Ave. With no suitable space available in Waterloo, we moved the company to the Smith Shoe factory building in St. Jacobs, Ontario. It s been a love affair with the people of this town ever since. At that time, Dotzert Glove welcomed the most important addition to its customer base yet: Home Hardware. From 1961- 81, Dotzert Glove entered a period of rapid growth. Straw hats were distributed with 100 different styles of leather gloves. Successful lines of rubber boots and work shoes followed quickly. Dotzert Glove prospers because of its commitment to quality glovemaking. The company s loyalty to its customers and its community continues to provide new opportunities for growth and development. With the importance of our customers and community in mind, I sold the company to Brenda and Dennis Halk on January 1, 1995. They brought to Dotzert Glove a long tradition of success in other businesses, and have a passionate interest in the business of glovemaking. It s a pleasure to see them building so successfully on my father s opportunity from so long ago. And on his dream. A lot goes into the making of our gloves because a lot is expected of them. Our gloves are hand-crafted, and are 100 per cent guaranteed. If your glove is not satisfactory we will replace it, no questions asked.
