Located on the secluded shoreline of Quirke Lake, Denison House was built by the former Chief Executive Officer, of Denison Mines Limited, Stephen Roman. Built in 1979 to replace the former Executive Lodge, which was structurally weakening due to the harsh Northern winters, it also became a symbol of Denison Mine’s success. In 1978, Denison Mines marked a year of outstanding achievement reflected in the 109% rise in earnings. Furthermore, with contracts spanning over the next thirty-two years, the Elliot Lake operations had the assurance of stability. Stephen Roman Chief Executive Officer of Denison Mine’s was projecting decades of wealth for the area, and he wanted to invest some of the profit into building this luxurious lodge. During the late 1980’s and early 1990’s as the mining industry in Elliot Lake was in its final stages of closure the fate of the Denison Executive Lodge became uncertain. Denison Mine’s was interested in relinquishing responsibility for the Lodge and was not successful in selling the Lodge on the open market. Close to a decision that would have seen the demolition of the Lodge, executives at Denison Mine’s approached Elliot Lake Retirement Living to take on responsibility for the Lodge. The Board of Directors for Elliot Lake Retirement Living recognized the historical value of the Lodge and accepted responsibility for its management under the auspices of its newly formed for-profit company, NorDev. Currently managed by NorDev, Denison House as it is now known, stands as a reminder of Elliot Lake’s history, the legacy of the mining industry and the future of the community. Today Denison House is available for rent to the public. Visitors, tourists and residents alike can enjoy the splendor of this great House and come to appreciate the struggles and successes that are the story of Elliot Lake.
