There is a story about an airplane which is about an hour into a regular commercial flight. The pilot comes over the PA system, introduces himself and welcomes the passengers to the flight. Then he tells them, "We re flying at an altitude of 32000 feet at 750 miles per hour. I have bad news, and I have good news. The bad news is; we re lost! The good news is; we are making great time". Like the airplane in this joke, many race teams are making great time but they have no idea where they are headed. They have equipment, crew, sponsors; they may even win races, but they are unclear about their direction. They hop on the racing merry-go-round in the spring, and hop off again in the fall apparently unaware that they arrived and left from the very same place. Although they felt like they were moving forward, they have been circling around and around without actually going anywhere. Goal setting is a process that teams can use to get off the merry-go-round; it is the first step to improving your performance as a race team. By clearly deciding what you want to accomplish as a team and setting out the steps that you are going to take that will lead you to that accomplishment, you are creating the foundation on which to build a better team. Teams who use goal setting tend to achieve more and have team members who are highly motivated and more satisfied with their work on the team.
