Be the first to comment on this article... Q: I have a 2000 Ford F-150 with 161,000 km on it. I changed the ball joints upper and lower, and after everything was put back, the ABS light came on. With all the banging, is it possible to knock the wheel-bearing sensor out or is it possible that I might have broken the wire? It doesn t look like it. Technician Tom Zekveld replies: Something obviously has happened during the ball joint repair. Closely examine the wheel speed harness and sensors for damage and correct as necessary. If you cannot see any visible damage, ask a technician to scan for codes. This will localize the wheel that is presenting the problem. As for testing: The wiring to the wheel speed sensor is a "two wire" harness. There is no bias voltage on the wires, nor is it grounded. The wheel speed sensor is an AC voltage generator that requires the two-wire circuit to send the speed signal to the ABS computer. Therefore, the only way to manually measure the circuit is to disconnect the ABS harness connector at the computer, find the two wires of the problem circuit and perform a continuity test. Unless you are thoroughly comfortable with this procedure, take your vehicle to a reputable repair shop. Q: I have a 2001 Nissan Sentra XE with about 188,880 km. Intermittently the gas gauge, speed gauge and odometer will stop working. The odometer s trip meter stop working as well. Then all of sudden it will work again. Technician Tony Prochilo replies: After reviewing the electrical wiring diagram related to your 2001 Sentra, the most likely cause of an intermittently inoperative fuel gauge, speedometer and odometer is the electrical terminals/wiring at the instrument cluster or within the instrument cluster assembly. The voltage feeds and grounds appear to be intact since the engine tachometer and temperature gauge are not affected. These two circuits are common to all of the above gauges mentioned. Since these two gauges are functioning correctly, then the only other possibility would be the electrical connections or what is know as "the unified meter control integrated circuit" that is found within the cluster assembly. I would recommend having an experienced technician verify the above mentioned since the instrument cluster would have to be removed and possibly sent out to a repair facility that specializes in repairing electronic components. Q: I have a 1991 Infiniti G 20 with about 90,000 miles and it remains permanently in northwest Florida for use during my semi-annual two-months stay at my condo. While I m away, a Florida friend drives it a few miles "“ usually weekly. We ve both experienced a "dead car." I ve had three new batteries in four years. One friend suggested using a "battery disconnect" unit when not using the car. Technician David Gerson replies: Make sure that they install a top-quality battery. By that I mean a reputable manufacturer, not a larger capacity "“ a larger battery does not make it a better product. Have it fully charged before you park the vehicle.
