In 1974, a group of independent operators of small saw mills on the Bonavista Peninsula realized through joining forces they could move closer to achieving their goals. The group believed sharing skills and ideas would improve economic opportunities. The new partners built a mill, bought resaw and planing equipment and incorporated Jamestown Lumber Company Limited on September 4, 1974. Production that first year was 278,000 board feet. From this modest start Jamestown Lumber now manufactures 14, 000,000 board feet of finished lumber annually with sales in excess of $7 million. Jamestown Lumber s own sawmill produces most of the company s planing mill requirements. The sawmill also produces high quality pulp chips which are delivered to Abitibi-Consolidated Incorporated (ACI) (Grand Falls & Stevenville). Wise use of the resource is essential and recovery of both lumber and pulp fibre is very important to the long term success of the forest industry. Jamestown Lumber conducts logging operations in eastern & central Newfoundland. Over $1,000,000 in annual payroll contributes to the economy and essential viability of many rural communities; not only at Jamestown but all along Newfoundland s north-east coast. Jamestown Lumber has negotiated the purchase of additional timber from ACI and the Government of Newfoundland & Labrador and has expanded its logging and silvi culture activities. Great progress has been made in maximizing fibre recovery and marketing bi-products. The company s capital investments since 1993 exceeds $10,000,000. Employment has increased from the original 9 to an average of 60.
