Many of us fantasize about hopping into a time machine to travel back a few years or perhaps even a century or two. But the scientists at CERN outside of Geneva, Switzerland the goal is to be present at the beginning of time itself; hundreds of physicists and engineers created the largest machine ever built with the goal of understanding just what happened a trillionth of a second after our universe was born. Essentially, this Large Hadron Collider acts as a time machine with the capability of transporting us back in time 13.7 billion years. This larger-than-life idea is the driving force behind Amir D. Aczel s latest publication, Present at the Creation: The Story of CERN and the Large Hadron Collider. While this notion sounds relatively simple at the outset, the complexity of the machine is evident with the first turn of the page. The author s successes in this novel come from his relaying direct observations and experiences with the minds behind the machine. It is at these times the reader gains an appreciation of the passion, years of hard work and determination that went into the LHC. Unfortunately, this only accounted for a small portion of his work. Aczel s largest challenge was in relaying countless physicists theories, which date back hundreds of years, to a less-scientifically geared mind. He made a commendable effort to lighten the material at hand but overall, with the amount of information the reader had to comprehend in such a relatively short book, the read was more akin to that of an academic journal. Present at the Creation delves into countless scientists theories, anti-matter, dark matter, and the possible existence of a Higgs particle, among many other extremely complex concepts. If you do not have a background in physics, I highly suggest doing considerable research into the subject so you can focus on how the LHC could impact our future instead of deciphering the endless barrage of scientific terms. In a rather odd turn of events, this negative can also be considered a huge draw; where else could you find such an extensive history of important scientific discoveries in fewer than three hundred pages. Upon closing the book, I realized just how much knowledge I had gained in such a short span of time. For this, Aczel has accomplished a significant feat. While the majority of us will never have the opportunity to see the Large Hadron Collider ourselves, Amir D. Aczel does offer a literary journey there in Present at the Creation. It is undoubtedly both intriguing and perplexing to have the Large Hadron Collider explained, however I would not equate the material covered to an entertaining read. Instead it is a novel I would suggest pouring over with a strong cup of coffee. Full Title: Present at the Creation: The Story of CERN and the Large Hadron Collider Author: Amir D.
