VARNA "“ Over half the positions on Municipality of Bluewater council will be filled with new faces Dec. 6, when members chosen in last month s election hold their inaugural meeting. At the final meeting of the outgoing council Nov. 15, departing members were recognized with plaques and both gave and received comments from their peers. Mayor Bill Dowson, who was elected this fall to serve another term, presented each departing councillor "“ Jim Fergusson, Bill MacDougall, Marg Deichert, Deputy Mayor Dave Johnston, and Peter Walden "“ with a plaque recognizing their years of service. MacDougall, who represented Hay West but did not run again this year, said after receiving his plaque that for anyone who has an interest in politics, council is a "great place to start." Deichert served many years as Zurich Ward councillor and sat on Zurich council before amalgamation, but lost the 2010 election. She said after receiving her plaque that she liked what MacDougall said and added: "Don t anybody complain about your councillors if you haven t sat at this table." Johnston gave a longer set of remarks, thanking those in the audience who show up to council meetings week after week. "Your dedication and commitment on behalf of your ratepayers is appreciated, and your written and verbal submissions to council have been helpful in accomplishing many positive changes in our community," he said. Johnston thanked Dowson and his fellow councillors for their "support, commitment and positive contributions to moving Bluewater forward and improving the level of service to the citizens of our community. "I thank each and every one of you for the friendships we have developed, and I wish you the best in your future endeavours," he said. Johnston then thanked chief administrative officer Lori Wolfe and other municipal staff for their "dedication, professionalism and commitment. "Without their support we would not have been able to achieve the successes that we have," he said. Johnston wished the incoming council every success, thanked incoming deputy mayor Paul Klopp for the manner in which he campaigned, and wished Klopp well. "It has been an honour to have the opportunity to represent the municipality," Johnston said. "I ve enjoyed my past years on council and I look forward to continuing our friendships." Walden, who also did not seek re-election this term, noted the motto printed at the bottom of every page of Bluewater s council agendas: "Valuing our unique quality of life, recognizing our diversity, respecting our traditions." "That s very hard to do in our municipality because of the different demographics we have," Walden said. "(They re) very different people. It s really, really hard for Lori Wolfe to try and do that "¦ So I would ask that the next council read that (motto) at every meeting and keep that in mind." Wolfe made remarks on behalf of municipal staff, extending a warm farewell to the departing councillors and welcoming new members of council. "It s been a great term," Wolfe added. "Your successes have been many, and some very difficult files indeed.
