Lidy and Ron Kok have grown quality bedding plants for more than 31 years.. What started out as a 2,500 square-foot growing house in 1979 is now a green thumb s destination for locally grown plants, high-quality plant products and superior customer service. "After 31 years we have a complete year-round garden centre as well as 40,000 square feet of growing space," says Lidy. The couple is also proud to celebrate 31 years of environmentally friendly gardening practices. They started growing "green" long before it became standard practice. "We grow in a more environmentally friendly manner than a lot of the large producers," Lidy says. Amsterdam Greenhouses grow nearly all their own products, from bedding plants to seasonals to specialty perennials. And she adds, "The plants that we don t grow are all grown within a hundred mile radius." That includes fruit trees, nursery stock and even roses. Selling home-grown and locally grown plants means Amsterdam Greenhouses doesn t have to import products and pollute the air. Lidy explains most people don t realize hundreds of truckloads of plants from California, Oregon and Arizona cross the border each year and end up in local neighbourhood gardens. Large-scale growers tend to import most of their products. Amsterdam Greenhouses is the only centre that sells exclusively B.C. products. In doing so, they support the local economy and local growers. When it comes to pesticides, Amsterdam Greenhouses looks for alternative methods before reaching for toxic chemicals. Staff are happy to dispense advice to customers who want to get rid of dandelions or unwanted insects without causing permanent damage. "We have always chosen the best, most environmentally friendly way to solve gardening problems," says Lidy. This will be the eleventh year the greenhouse participates in Nature Days "“ a springtime festival that promotes awareness and education about environmentally friendly gardening practices, such as using organic fertilizers and incorporating native plants. Amsterdam Greenhouses also runs seminars and events throughout the year. This year customers can register for their Sustainable Gardening series of seminars and learn about sustainable landscape design, gardening without chemicals and growing your own herbs and vegetables. Staff members are experienced highly-skilled gardeners who are always available to answer questions and dispense advice. Their goal is to help novice and experienced gardeners reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of the hobby.
