Okay "” let s not beat around the bush. Over the next month or so, you ll be asked for donations to Kawartha Lakes Food Source nearly everywhere you turn. Your workplace may get into the spirit of giving by organizing a food drive. Your church may ask for donations to the Food Source. Your kids school may challenge students to bring in non-perishable goods. Businesses you visit may encourage you to donate something to stock the Food Source s shelves. Instead of an admission fee, a wide range of special events will ask for you to bring a can or box to donate. And all that is on top of our own annual food drive at Loblaws and Valu-Mart, where a Food Source volunteer will politely ask if you d like to pick up a few items to donate. It s enough to make you start to wonder why the Food Source won t leave you alone. First of all, it s important to know that generous community organizations want to do something to mark the holiday season. To channel people s goodwill and natural desire to want to help others at this time of year, they turn to the Food Source as their charity of choice. (There are, of course, many other worthy causes in our area that you should also consider as a good place to donate.) We haven t necessarily asked for all these individual efforts, but we sure appreciate them. For hungry families in our community, this annual outpouring of generosity makes an enormous difference. By the very nature of the non-perishable items it collects, the Food Source can stretch your donations well into the lean times of the new year. And that s great news when food banks all over Kawartha Lakes have been experiencing sharply rising demand for most of the past two years, at the same time as we face a shortage of food to distribute to them. Every month through its member agencies, Kawartha Lakes Food Source is able to provide a few days food for 2,200 people "” more hungry mouths per capita than Toronto s Daily Bread Food Bank, the country s largest. So yes "” we know you re seeing our barrel, our logo and our volunteers all over the place. But we hope you ll take that as evidence of our community s goodwill and compassion, and be patient with the requests for yet another toonie or can of stew.
