The Kingston Whig-Standard Dear Editor: The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care has recently completed its review of the Health for Life Medical Centre, and advised us that the operation of our clinic does not contravene the Commitment to the Future of Medicare Act. As a result, we are now pleased to be able to publicly address the issues raised by some of your readers a few months ago. The Health for Life Medical Centre provides a multi-disciplinary approach to preventative health for people over the age of 40. An annual fee covers the cost of delivering the care that is not insured under the Ontario Health Insurance Program (OHIP). This includes the professional services of our life counsellor, dietician and physiotherapist, as well as some of the services of our nurse practitioner and medical director. The services that we provide as part of the annual fee are some of the same services for which people would be charged if they saw these non-OHIP funded health professionals elsewhere. Any medically-necessary care provided is, by law, payable by OHIP; and all services provided by the physician and nurse practitioner that are not eligible for payment by OHIP are charged to our clients. What further differentiates the Health for Life Medical Centre from other health care programs is that our services are provided under one roof by a co-ordinated team of professionals who are all aware of the health needs of each individual client. We assess the health and wellness of the whole person and recommend a comprehensive wellness plan based on the client s individual concerns and issues. Our Centre believes that our focus on preventative health, all within existing health regulations as the Ministry has confirmed, is the future of health care. With the Ministry s review completed, we look forward to continuing to serve the health and wellness needs of people in the Kingston area. Sincerely
