Overview Achievement of healthcare objectives commonly depends on availability of human resources with appropriate skills and competencies. Their education consists of combinations of experiential and theoretical learning opportunities. Lifelong education strategies can support recruitment and retention of healthcare providers. Access to continuing professional education as well as opportunities for involvement in theoretical and practical teaching can be important recruitment and retention factors for practicing healthcare providers. Lifelong education strategies can also be designed to introduce new applied topics into curricula of education programs to achieve desired skills and competency development. The education planning process involves healthcare delivery system representatives and education representatives among others, reflecting the joint responsibilities in the education process as well as the need to support each others goals and objectives. Education strategies may be discipline specific or, increasingly, be intended to enable achievement of healthcare objectives by considering skills and competency needs more generally.? Healthcare objectives may be expressed as system platform issues, such as e-health, patient safety, or patient self management. Objectives may be population focused, geography focused, or disease focused. In any case, the challenge is to develop education strategies which allow integration of life-long education efforts across disciplines, across the Province, across the continuum of care and across organizational boundaries. These networks necessarily form a complex web of intersecting and overlapping initiatives and interests.
