Once it debuts to the general public, Dave Sopha s mural Portraits of Honour may be seen differently in the eyes of those who view it. In his eyes, it s a very small way of saying thanks to those who have died in service to their country so that people like him can enjoy the freedoms they currently have. Sopha, a Cambridge-based artist, began work on Portraits of Honour in December 2008, shortly after reading a news story about the hundredth Canadian soldier to be killed as part of the county s mission in Afghanistan. He confessed that coverage of the mission never really phased him before, but this time it struck a chord with him. "My first thought became, How can the Kinsmen help our military? ," he said. "I had just finished 75 portraits of Canadian movie stars, so this is what I thought I d do." Once he decided on a medium to convey his message, Sopha then had to begin dealing with logistics - a 20-foot canvas wasn t going to be big enough, so it was replaced with a 10-foot high by 50-foot long one; normally working as an airbrush artist, Sopha decided to make the mural in oils so it would last a lifetime; what began in his garage has now found its way to a large workspace at Kin Canada headquarters in Cambridge. It was the small details that really made the difference, he said. "The big thing was doing this in oil," he said. "I read up on that while I was away with my wife - I used to be able to do four portraits a day when I was airbrushing them, but working with oils is not that easy." By his estimation, the first portrait took Sopha 80 hours to complete - he needed to get the shading just right, going with as many as seven layers to the portrait before he deemed it suitable. Kin Canada not only provided a place to work for Sopha, but they began supplying resources for him to paint with. The more momentum that built up, the more effort Kin threw behind the project. It has now become a national project for Kin Canada, headed by Fergus resident Bruce Lloyd. "We took a presentation to our national delegates in Halifax back in August, and we made our pitch to them on the Friday of our conference," Lloyd said. "On the following Monday, the 152nd soldier, Brian Pinkson, was killed. That really hit home for a lot of people." Sopha said there are 152 portraits included in the mural currently, taking up 37 of the available 50 feet on the canvas. And even though the Portraits of Honour is scheduled to head out on a national tour in June 2011, he vows it s nowhere near complete. "This has no cut-off date - not until every man and woman comes home from duty," he said. "As long as we re over there, troops are going to be at risk." Lloyd said there will be opportunities for soft viewings of the mural before the tour is officially started, and his company Ralph Basset Associates is already handling requests about having the project visit communities. "We re finding out how this is going to work, everything from what types of venues each interested community has to what they have in mind for its presentation," he said. "The main idea of the tour is to bring this to the families of the fallen soldiers.
