Updated April 29, 2010 0) WELCOMING COMMENTS My name is Mal Anderson and I feel honored to be working for the University Medical Group. I was extremely impressed by the selection committee and how they conducted themselves. This is an organization which has a proud history in its 38 years of existence. I have had the pleasure of meeting both Bob Lothian and Jack Wallace who have piloted the organization since its inception as a full time organization. I want to thank both Bob and Jack for their dedication in managing the organization. It has been my pleasure to work with Jack for the last few days. Based on the number of physicians and administrators who have dropped by with words of thanks it is clear that Jack made a deep and lasting impression on the people he worked with. On behalf of all of us I wish Jack and Lynn all the best as they set out on their new lifestyle change. I recognize how critical time is to all of you but at the same time I would like, where appropriate, to meet with as many of you as possible. I will be around the halls looking for you to say hello and get your ideas on what we are doing well and what we can do better. I know that UMG, like every organization is facing change. Change is inevitable; it is, in my view, one of the few constants in life. The organization has great board leadership and a great staff. I look forward to meeting many of you in the next days and weeks. You can contact me at manderson@universitymedical group.ca 1) THE RESTRUCTURING OF THE GFT PROGRAM Negotiations between Doctors Manitoba and the WRHA/Joint Operating Division continue. A recent meeting of the Benefit Committee was held on April 7, 2010 at the UMG Business Office. Representatives from UMG, the University of Manitoba and the JOD were in attendance. The meeting was held to discuss whether the University of Manitoba would be interested in offering a similar type of benefit package now enjoyed by the GFT membership to the new academic physician when they become independent contractors. The University implied that this could occur and the academic physician group could be enrolled as a new Division. The concept would need to be vetted through the University of Manitoba Board of Governors and also the present carrier; Great West Life Assurance Company. A meeting with representatives from GWL was held on April 12 to discuss these matters. They were supportive of the approach with the U of M. The status of the GFT Clinical Health Psychologist and Pathologist , who are primariliy salary paid was also discussed. Initial discussions have also ensued on the changes to the GFT Pension Plan that may occur. 2) UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA 1986 GFT PENSION PLAN All GFT members are enrolled in the University of Manitoba 1986 GFT Pension Plan. The GFT Pension Plan is a defined contribution (money purchase) Plan that is fully funded by the University of Manitoba. Individual GFT members do not make contributions into the Plan. For 2010 the contribution amount is $5,273.82 which is the amount the GFT member would receive if they had worked the entire 2010 year.
