Outward Bound Canada provides some of the most innovative community programming in the world. In 1985 we began developing programs with a vision of investing in communities with specific programming needs and requests. As part of current portfolio, Outward Bound Canada operates its Women of Courage program serving women who have experienced violence or abuse in their lives, and we work with many school boards and unique community partners with our Youth Asset Building Adventures designed specifically to support for at-risk youth who may be struggling to move in the directions of their dreams. Additionally Outward Bound is partnering with many Aboriginal communities from the Northwest Territories to Eastern James Bay. In cooperation with the Band Leadership, Outward Bound helps to co-create dynamic expeditions on their traditional lands that allow their youth to reconnect with the Land and to learn important things about themselves as they travel in the footsteps of their Ancestors. In 2009 many of these programs will include the guidance of local traditional people and Elders. These remarkable Community Programs experiences can provide participants with the confidence, skills, energy, and inspiration to transform their lives. The success of each participant in these courses benefits not only the individual, but also their families and communities upon their return from these rich learning experiences. Foundation grants, corporate sponsors, private donors and volunteers make these special programs possible and allow us to provide financial assistance and sponsorship to those who might not otherwise have the means to participate. THE FOCUS Every year, good kids make bad decisions. They drop out of school, experiment with drugs, or get into trouble with the law. Outward Bound ’s Youth Asset Building Adventure (YABA) program is an answer for young people who are experiencing difficulties at home, at school, or in their community. This innovative educational and health promotion program balances personal freedom (independence) with effective group interaction (interdependence), helping the participant to understand that real freedom combines both a high level of individuality and a commitment to community. Matching the traditional tenets of Outward Bound philosophy with the 40 Developmental Assets promoted by The Search Institute, this program helps to focus on what youth are doing right and then to help them learn new skills and improve others from a place of strength. The first challenge for YABA participants is learning how to make “good ” decisions. YABA students learn that personal choices have consequences. As well as being willing to try new things, to demonstrate responsible behaviour, and to make a commitment to the program, each participant must draw on individual strengths and develop group dynamic skills to make the group ’s expedition a success.
