The mental game may seem like a difficult area to delve into but the real secret is "¦ are you ready for this? The secret is realizing that what we think about comes about. And it s what we think about is that separates the high performers among us from the also-rans. We already know the key to performance isn t body type. Golfers of all shapes and sizes have been playing golf successfully since the game began. Look at any body type at your club or among your friends and you ll see a body type that has earned a tidy sum on the PGA Tour. So body type can t be the key to performance. We also know that co-ordination isn t the be-all and end-all it s often made out to be. If it was top athletes would dominate any sport they d care to pursue. Michael Jordan would have made a smooth transition from basketball to golf and Wayne Gretzky would be able to break 80. But he can t. Finally, technique is less important than the relative amount of effort people put into it. Those who think technique is what separates winners from losers should try explaining why Jim Fuyryk s loopy swing, Matt Kuchar s flat swing and Mickelson s extra long swing earned them more money in 2010 than the classic swings of all the college hot-shots who turn pro every year. So if the mental game is really all about what we think about, what then, should we be thinking about? The answer to that question is deceivingly simple too. There s a large body of research showing that certain thinking techniques lead to better performance than certain other techniques. The information however, simply hasn t been well distributed to the general public. So I decided to make it more accessible.
