Hypnotherapy Hypnotherapy is a treatment modality in which the patient is in hypnosis at least part of the time. Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness wherein the client s focus of attention is concentrated or narrowed, and ideas, which enhance motivation and change, are effectively communicated. Hypnosis allows us to influence autonomic and physiologic processes, promote healing, influence behaviour, attitudes, cognitions, emotions and memory. All hypnosis is really self-hypnosis and the client is not under my (the counsellor ’s) control. In fact the counsellor simply acts as a facilitator or guide, and the client is asked not to reveal or do anything he/she doesn t want to. Contrary to popular belief, the majority of people do not have amnesia after hypnosis and indeed remember everything that transpired. When clients want to use hypnotherapy in the course of their treatment, I will clarify any misconceptions or fears they may have about hypnosis, and establish suitability by asking certain questions regarding past physical and mental health. (i.e. take a detailed history) For individuals who want only one or two sessions, suitability, history taking and education are still included. Clients are generally given a recording of the session so they can continue to work on their tape at home. Hypnosis is not a new treatment and has been used by the Celts, Druids and Egyptians to name but a few. Over the years I have found it to be a valuable, powerful and effective tool for many of my clients. Hypnotherapy With Children Hypnotherapy has been used with children for more than 200 years. Research indicates that hypnotizability and suggestibility are limited in young children, but increase markedly from ages 7-14 years. It appears that children generally have more hypnotic talent than adults. During therapy the inner world of the child s imagination is utilized and the part of the child that strives for wellness and social interaction through mastery and experience of the world is addressed. Treatment is not passive submission but is active and enjoyable for the child and takes place within a comfortable and safe relationship. Hypnotherapy allows the child to use imagery skills to promote feelings of mastery and control and the therapist is merely a guide and teacher. Ultimately it is the children who heal themselves. Treatment begins with an intake visit in which the family and child describe the problem and information is gathered and treatment outlined. The second session involves the induction and assuming the child/teen is comfortable he/she usually works alone with the counsellor while parents remain in the waiting room. The child is also taught to do self hypnosis at home. Remaining session involve the use of different inductions and follow up. As stated previously hypnotherapy may be used for a variety of problems including nail biting, thumb sucking, enuresis(bed wetting), hair pulling, social anxiety, test anxiety, public speaking, pain control, phobias, self-esteem, stress, insomnia, nightmares, trauma and overeating. contact Louise for further information
