ASTECH was founded in 1991 with the intention of enabling ISVs and AD tool providers to port to and capitalize on IBM s AS/400. Both Mark Buchner and Joe Johari worked at the IBM Canada Lab, where we were responsible for AS/400 compiler development and Application Development business management. They both left IBM at the same time, along with Andre Boisvert, to join Cognos and pioneer the first-ever port of a major software platform, written in C, from UNIX to AS/400. ASTECH s most successful programs with IBM include: IBM AD Program: This program was the implementation of a consulting proposal to Sr. IBM execs which "opened up" the AS/400 platform to ISVs. ASTECH was retained as an independent consulting partner to recruit and subsequently qualify the software products of over 45 ISVs using a TPC-C like benchmark specification. The program was self-funded through initiation fees and considered a major success. Shark Camp: This program was the implementation of an ASTECH consulting proposal to IBM Sr. management. It was a worldwide face-to-face channel enablement program coupled with certification. It was self-funded through tuition fees and administered by IBM education worldwide. While there were both technical and sales tracks, the sales enablement proved to be strategically the most important component. The program was considered an immediate and huge success with over 4,000 IBM partners as attendees in the first three years alone. Despite the fact that it was not a profit centre, it generated in excess of $1M net margin in the first year alone. A large success factor was the sales enablement being delivered in local language with bi-lingual speakers which resulted in extraordinary results in Germany, France, Italy and Argentina Top Gun: Top Gun is a 5-day, immersion-based, sales education program considered to be the highest form of sales enablement for IBMers and key Partners. It is available for all major IBM brands under a multi-million dollar budget. ASTECH was retained by IBM in a contract role to manage and deliver Top Guns for WebSphere, Rational, System X, Information Management (IM), System z, and System i. Unlike Shark Camp, Top Gun has no tuition. Mark Buchner personally delivered 25 Top Guns as Class Manager (mostly WebSphere) around the planet including locations such as Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Johannesburg, Sao Paulo, Berlin, Brussels, Dubai, Washington, Mexico City, Stockholm, Rome, Moscow, Sydney, Bangkok, Singapore, etc. Highlights include management of win plans for prospective customers and pre/post class testing.
