Whether this is your first experience with university, or the latest chapter of your journey through higher education, I am confident that the University will provide you with an inclusive, engaging, and vibrant community of learners. No university in Canada "“ and only a handful of universities in the world "“ can rival the variety of U of T s academic programs, and the array of outstanding scholars, staff, and facilities that support them. However, our greatest and most enduring strength is the quality of our students, and I am therefore very glad that you have chosen to join us for a few years. You can, and should, expect to receive from your university career, opportunities to develop a range of critically important skills and capabilities. Concurrently, I would urge you to take full advantage of some of the opportunities on offer for engagement with campus life outside the classroom. U of T has well over 500 student organizations on our three distinctive campuses. Within and around these groups, or within a department or college, our students are almost always able to find or create their own sense of community. In my conversations with them, University of Toronto alumni often recall these years as a period of great personal growth where they made life-long friends and had many memorable experiences.
