Ena Lake Lodge
Owner Don Brown is a crook!

Sports

I wish I had know about this web site back when I hunted at Ena Lake. Today it's Feb. 19, 2008. It's been a couple of years since "the worst hunt of my life" has happened, but I was so upset I can still remember like yesterday.

My dad and I have hunted Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Sac, B.C, and Alaska for black bear and all the hunts we were on we have had a chance to shoot bears, and on the last hunt we both took 7'-0" black bears. So we have seen average guides to above average guides, but unfortunatley we have seen the worst owner-Don Brown.

It all started when we flew in into the camp by float plane. We unloaded our gear in the rain and ran into the lodge for cover to dry off. When we were meet by Don he informed us that he had not been able to get the stands baited and ready to hunt-as we here the float plane take off to only return in 6 days!

So it started off very bad, and it gets worse! After we pay him the balance, he then tells us that the hunters stay at the cabin not the nice looking lodge that was in the flyer, only the fishermen stay there. So he sends us across the lake in a 16' boat in the rain to a primitive cabin with no electricity or water just at dusk.

When we get to the cabin our guide, Gordon, starts to apologize over and over about the conditions and the fact that nothing is ready. His wife was at the cabin cleaning and getting something ready to eat, she was our cook. They both worked very hard for us. We had to go out the next day to catch fish so we could have bait to put out at our stands that were just hung the day before we got there.

It was one thing after another: the generator quit and Gordon had to work on it daily, they didn't supply enough food and water for us so Gordon had to go back to the main cabin a sneek out more food for us. But I've hunted much much rougher conditions, but I was told that ahead of time and packed for it. I thought as long as we see bears it will take care of all of this crap. Out of 5 hunters only 1 hunter saw a bear, and I hunted 8 to 10 hours a day!

When we went back to talk to Don about some kind of refund and he rufused. Gordon informed us that he and his wife were going to quit after the next group leaves camp. So hunters be aware and check out the references!
If he was in the U.S. I probably would have sued him. We did turn him in to the local officals for not issuing licences to all the hunters. So I think he might have gotten a little heat for that, but not enough in my mind.
