States Sweepstakes Winner Discusses International Law Must pay Processing fee to get "winnings"

Construction & Repair

I was contacted by mail stating that my name was drawn as a sweepstakes winner, winning $75, 000. My name was supposedly drawn through a computer ballot system from Readers Digest and National Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes databases.

Included in the envelope with the letter was a check for $3956.69, it had watermarks on it and fingerprint verification. The check looked very real. The letter stated that I had to pay a "processing fee" in order to get my winnings. This was my first clue that this was not a real sweepstake.

It also discussed the International Law which guided the fair personal collection of cash prizes. Then stated that I must contact Richard Goodman the "claims agent" to cash the check that was sent. Once the check was cashed, and I payed a processing fee the letter stated that I would receive the rest of the money that I supposedly won.

When I contacted Richard Goodman, on a Saturday, he answered the phone with a "hello" not stating the company he worked for. This was yet another red flag.

The check looked real. And, I almost got excited when I read the letter. Thank goodness that I did not try to cash the check. I found out after that I would have had to of filled out forms sent to me by Reader's Digest in order to win the sweepstakes, I had never done that.
