No recovery of high-value stolen/lost box

I am a student who engaged Capital Moving Services to move my home from Vancouver to Montreal. I decided to use this company because they had the best cost quote. I purchased 'declared value' insurance for about $43, which I was told would cover the maximum allowed value of $2000. A box valued at approximately $2500 was inventoried as loaded on their truck but was not delivered. I repeatedly follow up with Capital Moving about the box that was not delivered (they did not follow up with me) and was told that they were 'still looking for it'. About 8 days after the delivery of my items, at their instruction, I filed a 'claim' specifying details of some of the box contents valuing up to $2000 on their website. When I did not hear back from them a month later, I followed up again and was told that a claim response letter was to be sent out that week. When the claim response arrived, it indicated that they would pay me $32.78. They took $2000 and divided it by 61 items (where an item is a broom, vacuum, box, etc.). I should have checked the Canadian Better Business Bureau (BBB) first because this company has over 50 reports of misconduct and poor service. I have contacted the Scarborough police about the stolen box and they indicated that I must pursue this matter through the courts. The police officer let me know that there are numerous fraudulent moving companies in operation and something similar had happened to them in a long distance move. However, once a person signs a contract with the moving company, issues that arise become a civic matter. The officer encouraged me to pursue resolve of this matter through the courts because the moving company is responsible for the contents in the box. I hope that in documenting this situation other students/potential customers can avoid being victimized by this moving company. I intend to continue to pursue accountability for and recovery of the undelivered items.
