Steve & Carol Newby Scam, Sweatshop Hats, Ripoff, Illegal Money

If you're at a trade show, stay away from a family of shysters named Steve & Carol Newby, operating a company that changes names frequently. Their current name is "Moose Creek Hat Co.", and they were last seen at the Exhibition, CNE in Toronto, in the Arts, Crafts and Hobbies building.

These guys are selling hats labeled as homemade, but when you buy the hats, you'll find they come apart easily. Look carefully under the material, if they haven't cut out the label, these "homemade" hats are "Made in Taiwan", pure sweatshop.

My wife bought a hat there and when she bought it to show me, the top of the hat came detached from the rim. When we tried to return it, Carol Newby told me they had a "zero tolerance return policy", and accused us of damaging the hat ourselves. I can assure you the time between us discovering the flaw and buying it was about 20 minutes. When I demanded to speak to the manager, Carol's son became belligerent and shoved me with his chest.

I called around and apparently these guys are people to stay away from. They buy sweatshop clothing and sell it for high prices buy displaying them with mannequins at trade shows, making the items look fashionable. They buy in bulk, and have sold items in bulk to stores and such, only for the store owners to discover they were sold goods that didn't match what was agreed on.

There is zero illegal crimes being committed here, so there is nothing the police can do.
