Passed bad checks, breached copyright laws, stole product

I worked as an academic writer for this firm, from my home base in NZ. In November of last year i was so swamped by the work they were insisting I do (up to 50 pages per day and they were ringing me on my mobile at home to tell me to do more pages) I collapsed and ended up in hospital for two days suffering from stress.

When I returned home I found I had been fired, which I was not too worried about, as the stress was more than I could take, but the firm owed me over $US 2, 000 for papers i had already completed and uploaded. These papers are then sold on to clients who have pre-ordered the work. I wrote and asked about my pay and received two abusive emails in return basically saying I would not get the money. When I pointed out that they were breaching copyright laws by selling my work on to clients that they had not paid me for (and therefore did not own) I was ignored.

About 4 days later I did receive a check in the mail for just over $US 2, 000. While it was not the full amount for my 40 papers they owed me for, I wrote and thanked them for the money and said I was happy to consider us squared away. A week later (between Xmas and New Year) my bank contacted me to advise that the check had been stopped and they had refunded the funds back to the American Bank it had been drawn on. I have sent two emails since asking for my money but I have received no response.

I have been advised to get a lawyer on to this - I have the invoice and returned check proving they originally did have intentions of paying me, and a complete list of the work they owed me for, despite them shutting me out of their site (I always write orders down). I also have the emails stating conditions of employment (not a contract) and understand I have a good case against them, if I can find a lawyer in Canada or the states who is prepared to work on a contingency basis.

I know this is not a big case to most people, but the money equated to a lot of hard work, and was my sole source of income.

This firm has ripped me off, and any help or advice would be appreciated.
