Construction & Repair

On July 18th, 2010 we discovered that the sump pump in our basement failed and the basement had flooded. We called Drain Rescue and they sent out a representative to review the situation. He advised he could replace the pump for $700. I had priced sump pumps earlier that morning and questioned the price since I had found several 1/3 HP (similar pumps) costing between $130 and $250. He advised the pump he was proposing was of much higher quality than what I was prepared to install on my own and that the pump he proposed cost more than $600. He advised the price quoted was not higher because of it being a Sunday and the price was always the same from their company. I allowed him to install the pump based on his advice this was a superior pump providing a longer duty cycle and better protection for our basement. The total time onsite was about 15 minutes.

After the individual left we investigated the pump provided and found the same exact model could be obtained in our city for $144. The warranty provided was identical to that provided by Drain Rescue. We also found out that the old pump that was replaced actually had a higher duty cycle (higher quality) than the new pump.

I called the company to register my concern over the pricing on July 19th. The call was returned the following morning where the representative agreed the pump could be purchased for 1/5th of the price they had charged but that "I don't set the prices" and the best he could do was offer a 15% discount.

I indicated we very much appreciated the individual coming out on short notice and providing a working pump and wanted to provide compensation. I also advised, however, that charging 5x the retail price for the pump was unfair and that we had been misled about what we were buying. A 15% discount under such circumstances was not acceptable.

We have 2 concerns: 1) The individual was either dishonest or misleading about the quality of the pump being provided. 2) The amount charged for the pump was 5x its retail cost which is unfair.

Stay away from Drain Rescue.
