So here it is:

I was a student at RCC College of Technology. At the beginning of my second year as planned I applied for a student line of credit from CIBC. This was declined. The reason? "RCC College of Technology students are no longer issued loans from our institution." That was it. No reason other than that one.

Great. So a month into my second year I had no money to pay the rent. I'd been living on peanut butter sandwiches, kraft dinner, and a piece of chicken with a tomato or a potato on the side once a week.

When rent came up I had no choice but to leave the city. No family members could help me out and I am originally from Prince Edward Island so I had to move back home.

THEN... RCC sends me a bill for $770.19 for the month I attended that I hadn't paid them for.

RCC sends this guy around to high schools recruiting students. I hear the guy has been telling people I'm some kind of reject loser who couldn't handle the school and didn't pay my bills. Wow. And this isn't just what I think he said. He didn't realize in PEI, everybody knows everybody and the guys he was talking to invite me to their homes for parties all the time.

Libel, I believe. And a huge ripoff. These guys have teachers that don't even speak decent english (their second language in most cases). Smart people, but why can't we get someone who speaks a language understood by students?

Well, this wasn't meant to bash RCC, but since I started writing and thinking about what happened, these guys definately are a ripoff.

The main point here is, RCC forwarded my $770.19 charge to Shellco Credit Systems Ltd, in Downsview, Toronto.
I got a letter or two saying that I had 10 days, then 3 days or something along those lines.

Finally, today I got the call. It went like this:

Me: "Hello."

SCS: "Hello, this is NAME WITHHELD from Shellco Credit Systems Ltd. I'm calling in regards to your overdue account with RCC, do you recall this? "

Me: "Yes."

SCS: "And you recieved our letter in regards to this matter? "

Me: "Yes."

So as you can see, pretty basic, the lady was very friendly and polite.

SCS: "So why haven't you paid this account yet? "

Me: "Well, I'm currently unemployed and I don't draw Employment Insurance. I start working on July 2nd though so you'll have to wait until then."

SCS: "Well can't a friend or family member put it on a credit card? "

I thought this statement was a little much considering there are 8 people in my family surviving on approx. $30, 000 per year.

Me: "No I don't think that's a possibility, you'll just have to wait a month or so."

SCS: "Ok, and you realize that failure to settly this account has already started affecting your credit rating and will give you bad credit for up to 6 years."

HAHAHAHAH, so, that's what trying to get a decent education gets you these days. Tuition for RCC is $13, 800 / year. I paid that once already. Now my credit is going to bad for the next 6 years over $770.19!?!

So anyway, up until this point the lady was just doing her job no problem here. Then...

Me: "Oh, that's alright. I don't mind."

Boom.

SCS: "Oh, so I guess you're just one of those DEADBEATS who doesn't pay their school."

I don't know how that would make the reader feel, but that did it for me.

Me: "Hey! Lady! You're going to call my house and call me a deadbeat? "

SCS: "Well" (at this point I cut her off)

Me: "I don't like being harassed at home. Send me letters but under no circumstances call me again."

SCS: "Sir" (at this point I cut her off again)

Me: "You'll get you're money in a month."

And CLICK.

So, I'm only a young man (19), but as far as I know, anyone who calls a person at home, representing a company or providing a service, must not insult the person they are speaking with intentionally.

And then the phone rings.

Me: "Hello! "

SCS: "Listen, you owe us money and" (cut her off again)

Me: "You are harassing me! "

At this point the lady flipped! She was screaming and yelling at me like you wouldn't believe! And I mean screaming. I have never in my life had anyone speak with me like that even in person.

So I kinda shouted over her as best I could:

Me: "There are plenty of ways to handle this! "

But she was still yelling something and didn't pay any attention.

At this point I kind of held the reciever away from my ear for a good 15 seconds at least. When I put the phone back to my ear she was still yelling so I hung it up.

Well, way to go Shellco Credit Systems Ltd., you just made the Canada-Complaints.com complaint.
I don't think I did anything to merit this behaviour on her behalf. I don't even think I should have to pay the money in the first place.

So, unless someone tells me otherwise, they'll get their money before the end of July and once again they little guy will get stepped on.
