Winning a lottery mailing a check

We recieved a letter and a check in the mail, the check looks very real in the amout of 4975.00 and the letter stated we had won a lottery in the amount of 250, 000. and we where to call this phone number and register before we cashed the check. we made the call a Mr Richard Clair . the man informed us to deposit the check and call him when it was done. that he would give us a tax person in canada to work with. we took the check to the bank . we asked them about the check and the letter. they said it was most likely a scam. and if we deposited it it might take up to 4 or 5 months to clear and if it bounced we would be responsible for the amount . so they would not take the check . we called the man back he said why did we show them the letter an just take it to another bank an deposit it .. an dont show the letter to them .. we then went on line an found there name on a rip off site .. how very disappointing, . the check looks very real so dont get caught up in this scam.
