Rip off sent me $990. and asked me to cash the check keep $100 and send my family member, not real the $870

Luckily I typed into ask.com gatewayevaluation scam, it then came up with this website and I read other people's situations, this is a sad thing, I even called and a man answered the phone and told me what to do, everything seemed pretty up and up, I hope everyone will read this, I am wondering if I could take the check to the prosecuting attorney or the attorney general's office and see if we can get rid of this scam artist.
