Cars & Transport

Well, they got me. These people scan the "AutoTrader" for people selling cars, then give 'em a call. That's how they found me. Initially, I thought here was somebody interested in my car, but no, they were interested in "Helping me sell it."

Well, I'm listening. So George tells me how they sell 80% of the vehicles listed, and they would list me for a fee of $150. Well, I was wanted to sell, but Good Lord, $150 is rather steep... BUT George assures me, if you haven't sold it after about 3 months, you get the $150 back, or I can renew the ad, and keep trying. Or get my money back. Well, how do they make money, I asked? Loans, he replied. Their primary source of income is financing.

I was sold. In went the credit card number. It sounded like such a good deal that I listed second car!!! Which ever car I sell, I'm happy, and I get the money back fro the other. No calls. Oops - no, I did get one call - a 17 year old who was hoping I would drop the price by 90%. Did I ask to much? No, what I asked for was in line with the other cars in either class, AND suggested by George.

It's been WAY more than 90 days now, both cars. Neither vehicle sold, they're still sitting in my driveway. We gave up. The posted "expiry" (if you look at the ad) has passed by about 10 days for the first car, and is in about two weeks for the second car. Guess what. The posted expiry is NOT the 90 day date - it's 180 days.

If you want your money back you have to apply WITHIN 7 DAYS after the 90th day your ad has been on line. If you renew the ad, you don't get the money back. If you apply for your money on the eighth day after the 90 days passed, too bad. You lose. 7 days, or nothing.

When George told me I could get my money back, I guess he forgot to mention that little detail, and left me (verbally) with the impression I could get my money back any time after the first 90 days.

I have a hunch. I think they sell a few cars, but NOTHING like what they claim. And the same cars are still on the listings - not many moving there, guys. BUT how many people (like me) did not actually click the "Money Back Guarantee" and realize just how small that time window is? LOTS. Quite a racket - bury the conditions somewhere, so you can say "You should have..." when we come looking for the refund. Oh they got me. Twice. Yeah, I learned a $300 lesson today.

If I can save one person from this shady practice - just one - I'll be delighted.
