My partner and I went online to purchase some wedding gifts for our friend from Canadian Tire Online.
When we went through the checkout process, a delivery charge of CAN $24.99 was added to the total (2 Muskoka chairs and matching side table).
We wondered how there could be a delivery charge since this is a wedding registry and the happy couple would be picking up the items themselves.
After a phone call to customer service, we were informed that the delivery charge is to ship the items from their warehouse to their store!
If you are to go to a store and buy these items and take them home with you, there would be no delivery charges. Furthermore, you would not pay to have that item shipped from the warehouse to be stocked in the store. That item will have already been shipped to the store so that it could be in stock for you to purchase.
I feel this is a blantant customer rip-off and worse, takes advantage of all the wedding guests coming to the Canadian Tire registry to purchase gifts. These are not cold customers off the street, but a group of people intent on buying and being directed to spend at Canadian Tire by the very existance of the registry. Shameful.
In case you may think that this is standard for all registries, we passed on Canadian Tire and purchased from The Bay, where there was absolutely no charges of this kind, whatsoever.
I am an advocate for canadian businesses and have defended Canadian Tire many times against the Wal Marts, Targets and the like, creeping up from the U.S., but due to these disturbing and shameful practices, I will not be so quick to defend it in the future. In fact, I can guarantee that there will be no Canadian Tire registry when it is our turn to get married. So sorry.
