TORONTO ON -- Two foreign students have been arrested in connection with what police say is a massive fraud operation ("Santa's Little Sweepstakes Scam) that involved forged cheques, mail scams and identity theft. Charges of extortion and threatening death have also been laid against one suspect, who is alleged to have threatened a bank employee to obtain information used in the scam,
Durham (TORONTO SUBURB) police said. It's alleged one of the suspects managed to withdraw $115, 000 from a business account using information obtained from an employee at a Pickering bank. The information was provided after the employee was threatened with death, cops said.
Durham (Toronto suburb) fraud officers launched an investigation based on information provided by TD Corporate Security and on Jan. 15 executed a search warrant at a Toronto residence.
During the search cops uncovered evidence of a sophisticated counterfeit cheque operation (Nigerian scammers sent a "Santa's Little Sweepstakes Scam letter sent to PI bill Warner in Sarasota Fl), including thousands of blank business cheques and high-end printers.
